What Supplements should I be taking?

With all the different brands and variations, the vitamin shelf at your local health-food store can be as overwhelming as the stock market! There are literally thousands of options but only a few that are truly considered “essential.” Most holistic health-care providers unanimously agree with “the big 4″ as everyone’s starting foundation:

  1. Probiotics – these little troops live in our digestive system and they are what allow us to properly digest our food. They are our intestinal flora. Unfortunately these guys have a lot going against them. Antibiotics, as you can imagine from their name, are a probiotic killer. Add to that an unhealthy diet, modified and preserved foods, alcohol consumption and dehydration, our intestinal flora needs reinforcements immediately!
  2. Multivitamins – a solid multivitamin fills in the gaps of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that we are not getting enough of from our diets. No matter how well you eat, you are still probably not getting the amount of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that your body really needs. Our food is highly modified, harvested before naturally ripening and usually packed for preservation not nutritional value.
  3. Omegas – especially Omega-3 is an essential fatty acid that our body requires to function. It is used in the production and repair of nearly every major organ. Most importantly it is the stuff that our brain, nervous system and eyes need to function properly. Omegas are found naturally in seafood and some grains however we do not consume nearly enough of those foods to get all that we need.
  4. Digestive Enzymes – just as the name states, these are enzymes (catalyzing compounds that help to break down other compounds) that aid and improve our digestion. Taken with or after a meal they help ease difficult digestion as well as improve the efficiency of what we digest already.
